Whisky has been growing steadily in popularity. And, whisky investments have been growing in value. But what whisky is a good investment? Here are five factors to help you decide if a particular whisky is a good investment.

1. What brand is the whisky?

Of all the factors, the brand is one of the most important in gauging whether a whisky is a good investment. Macallan is the best example of this, with the Macallan brand commanding a premium both in the general retail market and on the secondary market.

 2. How many bottles of whisky were produced?

Rarity is a key factor in value. If we look at one of the most popular brands for whisky investment, Macallan, they have both mass-market releases (in their hundreds of thousands) and limited releases (potentially just a few thousand). The fewer the number of bottles, typically the more valuable they are.

3. How exclusive is the whisky?

This is somewhat related to the above factor, as a lower number of bottles will make the whisky more exclusive. The other aspect of exclusivity relates to how it was sold. Was it available on the open market? Was it only available via a club ballot? Or was it perhaps never generally released? Beyond bottle club, the harder a whisky is to get a hold of, the more valuable it is.

4. Is the bottle part of a collection?

One-off whiskies can be very valuable. But, bottles released as part of a collection can have an added bonus. People will want to complete sets, and if you have a bottle they need - they'll be particularly keen to get it.

5. How was it bottled?

This is perhaps the most detail-orientated of the five factors.  Brands have several choices when it comes to bottling. The choices they make will influence how desirable a whisky is. These factors include:

●     Whether to show an age statement. Generally speaking, age statements are more popular than no-age statements. And, the older the statement the better.

●     What strength to bottle the whisky at. Generally speaking, the lower the ABV the less desirable the whisky. The higher the ABV the more desirable the whisky.

●     Whether to add colouring. Whisky lovers would prefer no added colouring.

●     Whether to use chill-filtration. Again, keen whisky fans would prefer un-chill-filtered.

It is fair to say the other four factors likely have a greater influence on the value of a bottle. And there are many exceptions that disprove this fifth factor (see many Macallan releases, for example). But all other things being equal, these details are relevant to a whisky's value.

This means that the inherent quality of the whisky increases over time - as does the value of the cask. Historic returns for whisky casks have been around 8-9% a year.
